Speaking Practice – for Language Improvement and Test Preparation

“…I first off wanted to say, WOW!…”

Speaking Practice

At ESL Red Deer you can take Speaking classes to improve your English, or practice for the speaking section of CELPIP General, CELPIP LS, IELTS Academic and IELTS General language proficiency tests.

Our speaking classes are usually one-on-one, but we sometimes form groups when we have two or more students at the same level who want to practice their conversational skills.

Some of our students take a one-hour speaking class every week because they don’t get opportunities to speak English at work.

You can take speaking classes in our classroom or online.

Please call/text Angela at 403-350-8709 for more information.

A Typical Speaking Class

During your speaking class you and your tutor will choose a topic that you find interesting. You’ll then listen to, or read, a short passage related to the topic. The passage will raise important issues that you will go on to discuss. As the discussion proceeds, your tutor will help you with vocabulary and expressions and note down any new words.

Towards the end of your conversation class, you may look at a picture of some data. You and your tutor will discuss the data and its implications.

At the end of your class, your tutor will give you the list of unfamiliar words and expressions that you have used during the conversation. We suggest you review this list daily until the next class. Make up sentences with your new vocabulary and use it to describe everything you see, smell, hear, taste and feel.

Technical Requirements for Online Conversation Classes

To take an online speaking class, you need a full-sized monitor and speakers. You can use a laptop, an iPad, or a computer monitor.

For much of the class your tutor will share her screen so that you can talk about pictures, work through exercises, and follow examples. The small size of phone screens makes it very difficult for you to participate in your class fully.

A Typical CELPIP Speaking Class

CELPIP Speaking classes are the same for both General and LS students.

CELPIP Speaking classes are available both in our classroom and online.

During your CELPIP Speaking class, your tutor will use prompts from our collection of 30 speaking practice tests. You will work through questions 1 to 8 as you practice:

* giving advice
* speaking about a life experience
* talking about a picture
* predicting some things that might happen in a picture
* comparing items and persuading someone that your preference is superior
* being diplomatic in a confrontational situation
* providing an opinion about a range of controversial subjects
* recognizing and describing increasingly abstract contexts

Depending on your readiness for the test we may suggest taking a couple of classes to review some of your weaker or missing structures that you need for your desired score.

If you’re preparing for CELPIP, please don’t hesitate to use us. You can take just one class or several classes. Ultimately we want you to go to your test with confidence.

A Typical IELTS Conversation Class

The IELTS conversation class is the same for both General and Academic students.

IELTS Conversation classes are available both in our classroom and online.

During your IELTS conversation class, your tutor will use prompts from the speaking section of an IELTS exam. You will work through sections 1 to 3.

* In section 1 you’ll practice introducing yourself and answering some simple questions about your life experiences
* In section 2 you’ll practice identifying the ‘who’, what’, ‘where’, ‘when’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of a given topic
* In section 3 you’ll practice providing well-developed responses to increasingly abstract questions

Depending on your readiness for the test we may suggest taking a couple of classes to review some of your weaker or missing structures that you need for your desired score.

If you’re preparing for IELTS, please don’t hesitate to use us. You can take just one class or several classes. Ultimately we want you to go to your test with confidence.
