 English as a Second Language for Intermediate

Intermediate English as a Second Language focuses on the vocabulary and structures necessary to dealing
with the workplace and conversational demands of life in Canada.

Intermediate English students practice reading, writing, speaking and listening as they
become more functional and able to interact with the people around them.

There are four intermediate levels – CLB 5-8.

As students progress between the four intermediate levels
they learn the language skills necessary to:

* express themselves
* deal with problems
* discuss issues
* report information

Intermediate English – Level 5

During level 5, the focus is on the present perfect tense. Students learn to describe completed activities in an incomplete time. At this level the writing and reading requirement increase as they rapidly expand their vocabulary.

There are typically 25-30 classes at this level, but some students progress faster than others and may complete the course in less time.

Intermediate English – Level 6

During level 6, the focus moves away from tenses to coordination and transition. At this level the writing and reading requirement increase as they rapidly expand their vocabulary and delve into the passive voice.

Intermediate English – Level 7

During level 7, the focus moves to subordination and the past perfect tense. At this level the writing and reading requirement increase as they rapidly expand their vocabulary and gain mastery of the passive voice

Intermediate English – Level 8

During level 8, the focus shifts to sentence variety as students learn to express their ideas with a range of clauses and phrases. the writing and reading component remain strong as they begin to look at language patterns and phrases in texts.
