CELPIP or IELTS: Which is easiest? 

Many people think:

* CELPIP Reading and Listening is easier than IELTS Reading and Listening
* CELPIP Speaking and Writing is harder than IELTS Speaking and Writing

For both CELPIP or IELTS your English needs to be at or above the level you need to achieve in the test.

We offer language courses at 12 levels to help you get your language skills up to the level you need to achieve in your test. You can take our English as a Second Language courses in a group or one-on-one, online or in our classroom.

After you have completed the required level, we will help you with your IELTS preparation or CELPIP Preparation. You can take your IELTS test preparation in a group or one-on-one with a tutor, online or in our classroom. You can also take you CELPIP Preparation in a group or one-one-one, online or in our classroom.

CELPIP and IELTS are scored differently:

* CELPIP is scored against the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). There are 12 CLB levels.
* IELTS is scored against international benchmarks. There are 9 levels.

CELPIP and IELTS are recognized differently:

* IELTS is more portable than CELPIP because it is recognized globally.
* CELPIP is only recognized in Canada.

CELPIP and IELTS are valid for different times

* IELTS is valid for 2 years.
* CELPIP is valid for different periods depending on the institution

CELPIP LS

CELPIP LS tests your listening and speaking.

CELPIP LS does not have a writing section.

CELPIP LS does not have a reading section.

CELPIP General writing is completed on a computer. You write your essay on a computer.

The CELPIP writing tasks are timed.

You:

* can spell-check your words
* must complete your essay within the given time
* must work within the time limit
* must provide a complete answer
* must know your essay formats

For some people reading on a computer is difficult. For them it can be very difficult to get a high score.

IELTS General writing is completed on paper. The tasks are timed. You:

* must write clearly

* cannot spell-check your words
* must work within the time limit

* choose the best answer
* don’t lose points for bad spelling
* must complete your answer within the given time
* wear headphones

If you need a lot of time to understand the questions, it can be very difficult to get a high score.

IELTS Listening

IELTS General and IELTS Academic complete the same listening tasks.

IELTS listening is completed on paper. To get a high score you must be able to:

* spell
* recognize numbers and letters
* write very clearly

 

 

Speaking 

CELPIP Speaking

CELPIP General and CELPIP LS complete the same speaking tasks.

CELPIP speaking is completed on a computer. You answer 8 questions while wearing headphones and talking to a computer.

For some people talking to a computer is very strange. For them it can be very difficult to get a high score.

To prepare for the speaking section you can use our CELPIP Speaking Tips and Examples. You can also book a private class to practice your speaking with a CELPIP tutor before the test.

IELTS Speaking

IELTS General and IELTS Academic complete the same speaking tasks.

IELTS speaking is completed with a person in a quiet room. The test is in three sections:

* introduction
* presentation
* discussion

For some people it is more natural to speak to a person. For them it is easier to get a high IELTS score.

Reading

CELPIP LS Reading

CELPIP LS does not have a reading section.

You must be able to read well enough to understand the questions in the speaking and listening section.

You must also be able to read well enough to pick out the correct multiple choice answer.

CELPIP General Reading

CELPIP General Reading is completed on a computer. You read and answer the questions on a computer.

The CELPIP reading questions are timed, multiple choice questions. You:
